Wylam Brewery | Newcastle Exhibition Park

Wylam Brewery operates its Newcastle taproom from the Palace of Arts in Exhibition Park – a Grade II listed building constructed for the 1929 North East Coast Exhibition. The scale of the building, the quality of the beer and the improbability of the combination make Wylam Brewery one of the most distinctive drinking experiences in the north of England.

The Building

The Palace of Arts is a large Victorian-influenced exhibition building with high ceilings, original architectural details and a scale that makes the brewery taproom feel genuinely grand. The interior has been adapted for the brewery use while preserving the character of the original building. The bar runs along one side of the main hall. The brewery equipment is visible. The combination of heritage architecture and working brewery creates a room unlike any other in Newcastle.

The Beer

Wylam produces a wide range of beer styles from the site. The core range includes pale ales, IPAs and lagers alongside seasonal and experimental brewing. The quality is consistently high and the range is broad enough that return visits yield different experiences. The draught selection at the taproom is larger than anywhere else serves Wylam beer. Canned and bottled beer is available to take away.

Events

The scale of the Palace of Arts makes it suitable for large events, and Wylam programmes festivals, markets, music events and food collaborations throughout the year. The Wylam Festival is the most significant – a multi-day beer festival that uses the full building and the outdoor Exhibition Park grounds. It is one of the best beer festival formats in northern England.

Getting There

Exhibition Park is in the north of Newcastle city centre, walkable from Haymarket Metro. The brewery is open most days of the week. The weekend afternoons are the busiest time, when families, groups and individuals all share the space in a way that reflects the building’s original exhibition park purpose.
