Newcastle remains one of the more affordable UK cities for eating out as a student. The combination of a well-stocked covered market, a proper Chinatown, and a range of independent spots that have not gone fully boutique-priced keeps costs manageable. Here is where to eat well for under a tenner.
Grainger Market
Still the best value food destination in the city. The Grainger Market on Grainger Street runs Monday to Saturday and has hot food counters, bakers, and sandwich shops across the covered Victorian space. A substantial hot lunch from one of the counters costs between £4 and £7. The pasty counter at the front is a reliable quick lunch. Go before 1pm to avoid the office crowd peak.
Stowell Street Chinatown
The Noodle Inn and a cluster of other Chinese restaurants on Stowell Street do set lunch menus that cover multiple dishes for around £8-10. Dim sum in particular represents exceptional value – you can eat well and generously for under a tenner at lunchtime. The area fills up on Sunday mornings with Chinese families doing brunch, which is a good sign.
Stack Newcastle, Pilgrim Street
The shipping container food village has multiple vendors covering burritos, loaded fries, burgers, and various other formats at around £6-8 per portion. The outdoor seating is free and the variety means everyone in the group finds something. Open daily.
Zapatista, Pilgrim Street
The burritos here are the real deal and large enough to count as a proper meal. Around £8 for a fully loaded burrito. Queue at lunchtime but it moves fast. One of those places that students discover in first year and return to all three years.
Supermarket Meal Deals
Tesco on Pilgrim Street, Sainsbury’s on Northumberland Street, and the M&S at Central Station all run meal deals that cover lunch for around £4-5. Not exciting but practical. The Tesco hot food counter does rotisserie chicken and hot sides at reasonable prices late in the day.
Pot Noodle, Percy Street
A budget noodle bar near the university doing customisable noodle bowls from around £6-7. Fast, filling, and genuinely tasty. Popular with students for a reason.
