Campus Jobs First
Both Newcastle and Northumbria universities run job boards specifically for students on campus. These roles are designed around term-time availability and are often the most flexible options available. They cover library work, student ambassador roles, events support, IT helpdesk, and administrative positions. The pay is at or above minimum wage and the employers understand exam season. Check the careers services websites early in the year – popular roles fill quickly.
Hospitality on Osborne Road and the Quayside
The bar and restaurant strip in Jesmond and the cluster of venues on the Quayside both hire heavily from the student population. Bar work typically pays minimum wage plus tips and the social environment suits students. The Botanist, multiple restaurants on Osborne Road, and the Quayside bars all advertise through Indeed and direct walk-ins. Evening and weekend availability is the main requirement. Kitchen porter roles are often easier to get and pay the same hourly rate.
Retail in the City Centre
Northumberland Street and the Eldon Square shopping centre have most of the major retail chains, all of which hire part-time. Christmas temp contracts from October onwards are a reliable entry point that sometimes convert to regular hours. H&M, Zara, John Lewis, and the food court operators all run flexible contracts suitable for students.
Delivery and Gig Work
Deliveroo and UberEats have significant coverage in Newcastle and bicycle delivery pays reasonably well in the central areas. The flexibility of picking your own hours suits students with irregular lecture schedules. Be aware of the weather – delivery work in a Newcastle winter requires proper kit.
Graduate Schemes with Part-Time Entry
Some local employers including the NHS, Sage (the software company), and several legal and financial firms in the city offer student work schemes that are structured part-time from the start. Worth investigating through the university careers service, particularly if your degree relates to a specific sector.
