Newcastle has a lot of club venues. Two stand out above the rest for students who care about the music rather than just having somewhere to be. Digital and World HQ operate at a different level to the standard student night circuit and are worth understanding properly.
Digital, Times Square
Digital sits just off Times Square near Central Station and has been the anchor of Newcastle’s electronic music scene for over two decades. The booking policy focuses on techno, house, drum and bass, jungle, and UK bass – real music booked properly, not a playlist in a big room. The sound system is serious. The main room has a raised DJ booth and a layout that actually works for dancing. Student nights run on specific evenings – check the Digital website for dates. Tickets for student nights are typically £5-8 booked in advance, rising to £10-12 on the door. Dress code is relaxed. Queue management is professional – you will not stand outside for an hour. If you have any interest at all in electronic music, this is the venue to prioritise.
World Headquarters, Curtis Mayfield House
World HQ is on Curtis Mayfield House off Carliol Square and books soul, funk, disco, hip-hop, and electronic music. It is an independent venue with a long history and a consistent commitment to quality booking. The room is medium-sized with a proper wooden dance floor and a sound system that handles the soul and funk bookings well. Student nights run on various nights through the week. The crowd skews slightly older than the average student club but the atmosphere is better for it. Entry is typically £5-8 for student nights. The venue is committed to sustainability and independent culture in a way that feels genuine rather than performative.
Practical Notes
Both venues are within walking distance of Central Station and reachable by taxi from Jesmond in around 10-15 minutes. Pre-booking is strongly recommended for bigger nights at both – Newcastle students know about both venues and tickets for quality bookings go fast. Follow both on social media for lineup announcements, which typically drop six to eight weeks in advance.
