Malmaison Newcastle sits right on the Quayside, which makes it one of the best-located hotels in the city if you want to be in the thick of it. The building is a converted Victorian warehouse – all exposed beams and dramatic brick – and the Malmaison brand has leaned into the darkness rather than lightening it up. Black leather, low lighting, deep colours. It works.
Rooms vary in size but the river-facing ones are worth the upgrade – waking up to the Tyne Bridge and Sage Gateshead across the water is a genuinely special Newcastle experience. The brasserie does a solid weekend brunch and a proper evening menu, and the bar stays lively well into the night at weekends.
