Student Travel Hacks Newcastle: Railcard and Metro Deals

Buy this in your first week if you do not already have one. It costs £30 per year and gives 33% off most rail fares across the UK. Newcastle is well connected by train – Leeds, York, Edinburgh, Manchester, and London all run regular services from Central Station. The railcard pays for itself on a single Manchester or Edinburgh return. It is also available as a two-year version for £50. Digital version available via the Railcard app.

The Tyne and Wear Metro pop card is a contactless top-up card that gives you slightly cheaper fares than paying on the day at a machine. Load credit at any Metro station or online. For students using the Metro regularly, this is simply more convenient than queuing for a ticket each time. A Metro day ticket covers unlimited travel across the whole network for around £4.80, which is useful on days when you are making multiple journeys.

If you are commuting between home and the city centre regularly, a Metro student monthly or termly pass is worth calculating against individual fares. The Student Metro Pass is available through the Metro website with student ID verification. Works out cheaper than paying daily if you travel at least four times a week.

For long-distance travel on a budget, National Express coaches from Newcastle Central Coach Station on St James’ Boulevard connect to most major UK cities. Fares booked in advance are often significantly cheaper than trains. The journey times are longer but for a student on a tight budget the cost saving is usually worth it on longer routes like London.

Newcastle is more cyclable than its hills suggest. The city has invested in cycle routes and most student residential areas in Jesmond, Heaton, and Sandyford are within reasonable cycling distance of both universities. A second-hand bike and a decent lock are worth considering, particularly for students living in Heaton who have a longer walk or bus ride to campus.
