Newcastle’s got Newcastle University and Northumbria – proper universities that attract serious students and create genuine campus culture. The student scene is real, the cost of living is reasonable, and you can actually have a life while studying.
Cost of Living
Newcastle is affordable for students. Student halls are reasonable. Private halls exist at various price points. House shares in proper areas cost less than most UK cities. Nights out are cheap – pints under £4, good meals under £10. Greggs for breakfast, Bundobust for lunch, you can eat well on student money. Books and supplies are standard UK prices.
Where Student Live
Ouseburn and Heaton are proper student areas – good community, close to unis, independent vibe. Jesmond has students and families mixed, still good atmosphere. City centre halls are expensive but walkable. Avoid living in the very centre unless you’re loaded. Gateshead is cheap and still connected.
Universities
Newcastle University is on the Town Moor, beautiful campus, solid reputation. Northumbria is city centre-based, more urban feel, both universities have actual student populations that create culture.
Student Social Scene
Union venues exist, proper student nights, the usual. But better is the actual Newcastle scene – Ouseburn has student-friendly bars and venues, cheap drinks, proper atmosphere. The Cluny regularly has student nights. Fat Hippo and Scream for Pizza are student staples. Stack Newcastle is summer chaos in the best way. Nights out are affordable because everything’s affordable.
Study Spaces
Libraries at both universities, proper facilities. Newcastle Central Library is good and free. Cafés are abundant – Cartington’s, Bare Coffee, various spots. The city centre is walkable, good for studying in different spaces.
Part-Time Work
Retail and hospitality jobs are available. Minimum wage is standard. Greggs, restaurants, shops all hire students regularly. Ouseburn has loads of independent businesses needing staff.
Cultural Life
Museums are free or cheap, galleries have free entry to some sections. Live music is affordable. The Cluny is student-friendly. Film festivals, theatre, all the stuff that makes student life good is here and accessible.
Transport
Student discounts on metro passes. Biking is good. The city’s walkable. Everything’s accessible without needing a car.
Newcastle’s genuinely good for students because it’s a proper city that happens to be affordable.
