Postgraduate life in Newcastle is a different proposition from undergraduate. The social infrastructure is less ready-made and the average age means the Osborne Road student pub circuit is not always the right fit. But Newcastle as a city has more than enough to sustain a good postgraduate social life once you know where to look.
Postgraduate Societies at Both Universities
Both Newcastle and Northumbria have postgraduate-specific societies and social committees within their student unions. Newcastle University’s Postgraduate Society runs events through the year including socials, trips, and networking evenings. These are the easiest way to meet other postgraduates quickly, particularly for students who have come to Newcastle from elsewhere for their masters or PhD and do not have an existing social network in the city.
The Ouseburn Valley
The cluster of venues in the Ouseburn Valley – The Cluny, the Cumberland Arms, the Free Trade Inn, and the Tyne Bar – attracts a slightly older and more varied crowd than the Jesmond strip. Live music, good beer, and an atmosphere that does not feel exclusively student-oriented. This is where postgraduate students who want a proper night out rather than a standard student night tend to gravitate.
Pitcher and Piano, Quayside
For a more city-centre option, the Quayside bars attract a mixed crowd of young professionals and postgraduate students. Pitcher and Piano has a good riverside setting and is often used for departmental postgraduate socials. The Quayside as a whole is better for the postgraduate set than the undergraduate drinking areas.
Research Groups and Department Socials
For PhD students in particular, the department social tends to be the most practical weekly social anchor. Research groups, seminars with post-event drinks, and conference prep groups all provide regular contact with people at a similar stage. Do not underestimate how much this matters for postgraduate wellbeing – isolation is the primary risk for PGR students and the social infrastructure of the department is the most direct counter to it.
Networking Beyond the University
Newcastle has a growing tech and creative sector based partly around the Ouseburn and partly around the Newcastle Helix development near the university. Graduate events, startup meetups, and professional networking events run regularly and are accessible to postgraduate students. EventBrite and Meetup list most of them. This matters particularly for students whose research connects to industry.
