The most spectacular free option in the city. The Quayside fills with crowds as midnight approaches and the fireworks – launched from the bridges and the Gateshead bank – reflect off the Tyne in a way that makes it genuinely impressive. Arrive early for a good position; the path between the Tyne Bridge and Millennium Bridge gets crowded from 10pm. The cold is manageable if you dress for it. This is Newcastle at its communal best.

Every major Newcastle venue runs a ticketed NYE event. Digital’s NYE programme typically brings in significant bookings and sells out weeks in advance. House of Smith and the Diamond Strip venues run black-tie and themed events that attract a dressed-up crowd. Tiger Tiger does a multi-room event that suits groups who want a guaranteed entry and a big venue. All ticketed events require advance purchase – don’t assume door entry on NYE.

For a sit-down NYE, the city’s restaurants offer set menus from late November. Blackfriars, Jesmond Dene House, and the hotel dining rooms fill up fastest. Booking in October for a specific restaurant is not overcautious. The Quayside restaurants – Caffe Vivo and others along the waterfront – offer the combination of food and fireworks views that makes for a particularly good NYE dinner.

Many Newcastle pubs do a quiet and effective NYE without the ticketed event premium. The Free Trade Inn in the Ouseburn, the Tyne Bar, and the Dog and Parrot all offer a more low-key alternative for those who want a proper pub New Year. Some charge a small cover on the door; most don’t.

Public transport on NYE in Newcastle runs extended hours. The Metro runs through midnight and into the small hours. Licensed taxis from the city centre taxi ranks are available but busy – book ahead if possible or use a trusted app.
