Freshers Week in Newcastle runs across both Newcastle University and Northumbria University, usually in the last week of September. The two institutions have separate programmes but the city treats the whole period as one long collective welcome. Here is how to get the most out of it without burning out by day three.
Buy the Freshers Wristband Early
Both universities sell Freshers wristbands through their student unions that cover multiple nights across the week. Newcastle University Students Union (NUSU) and Northumbria Students Union each run their own programmes. Buy before you arrive if you can – they sell out and the per-night walk-up prices are significantly higher. The NUSU events typically use venues across the city as well as the Boiler Shop on South Street.
Don’t Miss the Day Events
The best networking happens in the daytime. Societies fairs at both unions are worth a serious visit – Newcastle has strong societies across sport, arts, academic, and social categories. The Newcastle University one fills out the Sports Centre and King’s Hall. Go on the first day, not the last, when the queues are shorter and stall reps still have energy.
Get Registered with a GP First
Boring but genuinely important. Registering with a local GP in Jesmond, Heaton, or wherever you are living should happen in the first few days before the queues build up. The student health centres at both universities are an easier first port of call. Pharmacies on Osborne Road are well stocked and used to student queries.
Sort Your Metro Card
A Pop card from any Metro station covers the city. Load it up rather than paying per journey – it works out cheaper across the week. Central Station is the main hub but Jesmond, West Jesmond, and Haymarket stations are all walking distance from the main student areas.
The Quayside Walk
Do this on your first or second day before the nights start blurring together. Walk from the Swing Bridge to the Millennium Bridge and back along both sides of the Tyne. It places the city in your head properly and you will reference it all year. The Baltic, Sage Gateshead (now Glasshouse), and the bridges are all on that stretch.
Pacing Yourself
Seven nights in a row is not compulsory. The students who arrive at their first lectures still functioning are the ones who took two or three nights off during Freshers Week. The social infrastructure of Newcastle runs all year – you are not missing the only chance you will ever get.
