The Battle of Elswick: Armstrong’s Works and the Armed Tyne

By the 1880s, the Elswick Works on the Tyne employed 25,000 people and supplied warships and artillery to navies across the world. One man's engineering genius remade an entire river.

Stand on the Tyne riverbank at Elswick today and the industrial landscape is largely gone. The Scotswood Road frontage carries a retail park and housing developments. The river itself is quiet. It takes real effort to imagine what this stretch of water looked like in 1885, when the Elswick Works of William Armstrong stretched for a mile along the north bank and the Tyne was busy with the warships being built and tested in its waters. This was the most significant armaments production site in the world and it was in Gateshead, Newcastle, not in some distant imperial capital.

William Armstrong and the Invention of Modern Artillery

William George Armstrong was born in Newcastle in 1810 and trained as a solicitor before his engineering obsessions consumed the practice. His first significant invention was the hydraulic crane, developed in the 1840s – but it was his redesign of field artillery in the 1850s that changed history. The Armstrong breech-loading gun, introduced to the British Army in 1859, was lighter, more accurate and faster to reload than anything that preceded it. The Board of Ordnance adopted it. The army subsequently had second thoughts and reverted to muzzle-loaders for two decades – one of the more remarkable institutional retreats in British military history – but by then Armstrong’s reputation and order book were established across the world.

The Elswick Works opened in 1847 on the north bank of the Tyne. It began with hydraulic cranes and engineering components. By the 1860s it was producing the Armstrong gun in volume. By the 1880s, after merging with the shipbuilder Charles Mitchell’s yard at Low Walker, the combined Elswick operation was building entire warships from keel to armament. The production vertically integrated in a way that had no precedent – the same company designed the ship, built it, armed it and tested it on the river outside the front gates.

The Naval Clients

Armstrong’s Elswick supplied to whoever would pay. The Royal Navy was a client but so were the navies of Japan, Chile, Brazil, Italy, Austria-Hungary and others. The Japanese cruiser Yoshino, built at Elswick in 1892, was one of the fastest warships in the world at the time of its launch. It fought at the Battle of the Yalu River in 1894 as part of the Japanese fleet that defeated China’s Beiyang Fleet – a fleet that also included ships built at Elswick for the Chinese. Armstrong sold to both sides, which was consistent with the commercial logic of the era if not with any obvious moral framework.

By the 1880s the workforce at Elswick and the associated yards numbered around 25,000. The town of Elswick itself – the neighbourhood that surrounded the works – was almost entirely dependent on the factory. Streets of workers’ housing ran back from the river, shops and pubs catered to the shifts, the social geography of the area was structured entirely around the rhythms of production. When the works closed in stages through the twentieth century, Elswick was left with the infrastructure of dependency and nothing to sustain it.

Armstrong’s Legacy

Armstrong himself became the wealthiest man in England by the 1880s. He built Cragside in Northumberland – the first house in the world to be lit by hydroelectric power, now a National Trust property of extraordinary grandeur. He gave Jesmond Dene to the people of Newcastle. He was made Baron Armstrong in 1887. He died in 1900 aged 90, having watched his works supply the weapons for a generation of colonial wars and naval rivalry that he had in part made possible.

The moral complexity is not easily resolved. Armstrong was a genuinely great engineer and a surprisingly progressive employer for the Victorian era – housing, education and welfare provision for workers at a time when most industrialists provided nothing. He was also the largest individual supplier of weapons to the Victorian imperial project and its rivals. The Tyne’s industrial heritage cannot be separated from that. The river made Newcastle wealthy and Armstrong made the river what it was in its peak industrial decades. That is the full truth of Elswick.

What Remains

The Elswick Works are gone but not entirely without trace. The hydraulic engine house that once powered the cranes at the Quayside still stands in a modified form. The Armstrong Building at Newcastle University, funded by Armstrong, is one of the most significant Victorian buildings in the city. Cragside in Northumberland is the most accessible window into what Armstrong’s wealth produced. And the riverbank at Elswick, if you know what to look for in the soil and the gradient of the land, still shows the outline of where the slipways ran down to the water.
