International Student Guide to Newcastle

Newcastle welcomes a significant international student population each year and both universities have strong support structures in place. This guide covers the practical ground that the official welcome packs often gloss over.

Settling In: First Two Weeks

Register with the police if your visa requires it – both universities provide guidance on this and it must be done promptly. Open a UK bank account as soon as possible: student accounts at Barclays, NatWest, HSBC, and Santander are all available and most are straightforward to open with a university acceptance letter and proof of address. The Monzo and Starling app-based accounts are often easier to open quickly for international students with limited UK credit history.

NHS Registration

Students from outside the UK who have paid the Immigration Health Surcharge are entitled to use NHS services. Register with a GP surgery in your local area during the first week – the university can advise on the nearest surgeries to your accommodation. Dental registration is separate and worth sorting early, as NHS dentists in Newcastle sometimes have waiting lists.

International Society and Student Groups

Both Newcastle and Northumbria universities have active international student societies and country-specific groups. The Chinese Student and Scholars Association at Newcastle is one of the largest, and there are active groups for students from India, the Middle East, Africa, and across Europe. Finding these early makes a significant difference to how quickly Newcastle starts to feel like home.

Food From Home

Stowell Street Chinatown covers most East Asian food needs. Wing Yip Cash and Carry on Leazes Park Road has one of the broadest Asian ingredient selections in the northeast. For South Asian groceries, Shields Road in Byker has multiple independent shops. The Grainger Market has international grocery sections. Newcastle is not London for food diversity but it is considerably better resourced than it looks from outside.

Visa Compliance

Attend your lectures and keep records of attendance. Student visa conditions require maintaining satisfactory attendance and the universities are required to report. Both institutions have international student advice services that can clarify any concerns about visa conditions – use them proactively rather than reactively.
