Valentine’s Day in Newcastle: Romantic Ideas for Two

Valentine's Day in Newcastle - better than you might expect from a city with this much banter.

Newcastle has a reputation for being loud, direct, and unsentimental. All true. But underneath the Bigg Market swagger there is a city that actually does romance well – the Tyne at dusk is one of the best backdrops for a date in the country, the independent restaurant scene has depth, and the bar culture includes enough quiet, well-made cocktail rooms to make an evening for two genuinely pleasurable. Here’s how to do Valentine’s Day properly in Newcastle.

01 Dinner

Dinner at Blackfriars

On Friars Street, Blackfriars is a twelfth-century Dominican friary that now operates as one of Newcastle’s finest restaurants. On Valentine’s night, the atmosphere in the vaulted stone dining room is genuinely hard to beat. The menu leans heavily toward North East provenance – good meat, good fish, considered vegetable dishes. Book in January – Valentine’s night fills up fast here.

02 Jesmond

Jesmond Dene House

The Arts and Crafts country house hotel in Jesmond runs a Valentine’s Day package that includes dinner, a room, and breakfast. For those who want to make a proper night of it without leaving the city. The setting – stone building, walled garden, woodland walks through the Dene – does most of the romantic work.

03 Evening

Evening Quayside Walk

Free, beautiful, and works in February if you dress for it. Walk from the Tyne Bridge to the Millennium Bridge as the lights come on over the water. Stop at a Quayside bar for a drink. Newcastle is at its most visually dramatic at dusk and the bridges over the Tyne are as iconic a backdrop as you’ll find in the UK.

04 Sage

Sage Gateshead

A concert at the Sage Gateshead – the Norman Foster building across the river – is a reliably sophisticated evening. The building is worth experiencing even before the performance starts. Classical concerts, jazz, and the occasional intimate performance in the smaller rooms all suit Valentine’s evening programming.

05 Zazen

Zazen Omakase

For something different, Zazen’s omakase menu is a genuinely shared experience – a succession of small, carefully prepared dishes eaten together at the counter. It’s a more intimate and memorable format than a standard restaurant dinner. Book well ahead for Valentine’s weekend.
