Newcastle University sits at the top of the city centre, close enough to Jesmond and the centre to give students access to two completely different pub circuits. Here are the ones worth knowing.
The Percy Arms, Fenham
Not the most obvious choice geographically but a firm student favourite. The Percy Arms on Ponteland Road has cheap pints, a relaxed atmosphere, and the kind of no-frills approach that suits a Tuesday night when you just want a drink. Quiz nights run regularly. A short bus or taxi from the main campus.
The Botanist, St Andrew’s Street
A step up from the average student pub but worth the slightly higher prices on occasion. The cocktail list is long, the food is decent, and the industrial-botanic interior makes it feel like a treat without being a special occasion venue. Student discount applies with NUS card.
The Trent House, Leazes Lane
Cheap, cheerful, and about five minutes from the main campus buildings. The Trent House is a no-nonsense boozer that has served Newcastle students for decades. Cask ale, pub classics, and prices that make it genuinely easy to go out midweek. Pool table, regular live music.
The Grosvenor Casino, Newgate Street
Worth knowing about for the bar rather than the gaming floor. The casino bar runs happy hour deals that make it a cost-effective pre-night-out option. Free entry with ID. The cocktails are cheap relative to the city centre average and the bar is well run. Worth a visit even if gambling is not your thing.
Pleased to Meet You, High Bridge
A bit of a city centre institution for good gin and a better-than-average drinks list. The Victorian interior is impressive and the staff know what they are doing. Not the cheapest but reliable for a quality night. Good for groups who want somewhere with a bit more atmosphere than the standard student bar.
NUSU Bar, King’s Walk
The students union bar is the obvious backup – cheap, on campus, and always busy during term time. Events and club nights run through the year. The prices are the best in the immediate area and you do not need to walk anywhere to get home.
