The Brandling Villa | South Gosforth

The Brandling Villa in South Gosforth is one of those pubs that appears on every real ale enthusiast’s northeast list for good reason. It has been doing rotating cask ales properly for long enough that it has become a reference point. The beer garden is one of the better outdoor pub spaces in Newcastle in good weather. The pub as a whole is the kind of place that makes you feel the effort of running it well is worth something.

The Cask Ale Range

The handpump selection at the Villa is serious. Multiple rotating casks are kept in good condition and the range covers local, regional and national breweries. The staff know the beers and can advise without being patronising about it. The turnover is high enough that you rarely encounter a beer that has sat too long. This is the standard that all cask pubs aspire to and not all reach.

The Beer Garden

When the Tyneside weather permits, the Villa garden becomes one of the most pleasant outdoor pub spaces in Newcastle. It is a proper garden, not a car park with tables. There is shade and shelter as well as sun. On summer evenings it fills with the South Gosforth community and the quality of the people-watching matches the quality of the beer.

The Food

The kitchen produces pub food done properly. The menu changes and is not enormous, which is the right call. Quality over quantity. Sunday lunches are well regarded locally. The food is secondary to the pub experience but good enough that eating here is not a compromise.

Getting There

South Gosforth Metro station is very close. The journey from Monument takes about ten minutes. The Villa is one of the easiest good pubs to get to from Newcastle city centre without a car.
