Seven Stories in Ouseburn is what happens when you dedicate serious space to children’s literature. The building is a Victorian warehouse converted into exhibition and library space. The focus is genuine – this is about books for children and the work that goes into making them, not children’s activities retrofitted to a generic space.
The Collections
The permanent collections span children’s literature from classic to contemporary. You see the actual books, understand how illustration and text work together. The exhibitions rotate, showing works in depth – single authors, illustrators, themes that run through children’s literature. The depth is academic without being inaccessible.
Interactive Spaces
There are spaces where children engage with books and making. Not just consumption but participation. They handle books, see how they’re made, experiment with storytelling. This active engagement is more valuable than passive observation. The space respects children’s intelligence.
Events and Programming
Author visits, illustrator talks, workshops – the programming brings the books alive. Writers and artists discuss their work. Classes on bookmaking and illustration. The events are genuine engagement, not entertainment with educational dressing.
