Jesmond Dene House Hotel

A genuine luxury retreat a mile from the city centre - the Arts and Crafts mansion in Jesmond Dene is Newcastle's most romantic hotel.

Jesmond Dene House is the kind of hotel that makes you forget you’re minutes from a major city. The Victorian Arts and Crafts mansion sits in the wooded gorge of Jesmond Dene, a hidden green corridor that runs through Newcastle’s leafiest suburb. Ferns, sandstone, and birdsong – it’s extraordinary for somewhere so close to the urban core.

The hotel has been meticulously restored and extended over the years. Rooms in the original house have thick stone walls and proper character; the newer garden wing rooms open directly onto the grounds. The restaurant has a strong reputation locally – seasonal menus, good wine list, nothing flash or contrived.

Spa: The spa is compact but well-equipped, with treatment rooms, a thermal suite and a pool. It’s particularly popular for hen parties and anniversary breaks. Book treatments in advance – it fills up at weekends.

Location: Jesmond Dene, Newcastle. About a mile and a half from the city centre – a pleasant walk through the dene itself, or a short Metro ride from West Jesmond station. The dene park is free to explore and excellent for morning walks.

Best for: Romantic breaks, honeymoons, milestone birthdays, spa weekends, and anyone who wants luxury without the city centre noise.

Nearby: Jesmond Dene park, Armstrong Bridge, Jesmond’s independent restaurant strip on Osborne Road, Gosforth Park. A short taxi to the Quayside and city centre.
